UN, Our View

The Flower below is how we see the United Nations system. The UN is made up of many different parts, so that the term ‘United Nations’ includes a whole range of agencies, institutions and member states. The Influx Project hopes to represent the worlds peoples who should also be a more valued part of the UN system.

The Influx Project identifies a number of problems in the UN’s structure:

A Referee
The UN basically exists to act as an independent referee along the course of international development, particularly when matters of peace, security, international law and human rights are being abused.

The Joint Loss
The UN is often criticised by people, mostly by people who do not actually contribute anything to it themselves and mistakenly expect it to work without them. Equally, the UN fails to provide satisfying opportunities to engage the public and rally their willingness for the UN to succeed.

Inherited Structure
Just as if the clock stopped when the UN was formed, the legal structure of the UN reflects the world as it stood over 60 years ago. Without any means to change this structure itself we are stuck with a frankly divisive structure that increasingly become more and more inappropriate for achieving its aims.

Lost Intention
The UN charter clearly opens with the words “We the peoples…” However the UN has become something more accurately described as “We, the dominant governments of yesteryear…”. It would be hard to argue reasonably that the UN reaches or represents its intended actors and beneficiaries, the peoples.

Inconsistency
When you have a program for spreading democracy but don’t adhere to these principles yourself…when the five permanent members of the Security Council are also the world’s 5 biggest arms dealers…essential trust is lost.

External Help Required
We feel that the current UN structure leaves the UN itself incapable of any reform worth doing. While it is certainly a considerable challenge we feel that the situation to be remedied best by an external, independent body such as we seek to provide by engaging you with the work of the Influx Project.

Below is a chart to demonstrate the unbalanced financial input to the UN that currently exsists.

In Progress

Rather than judging the UN to be either good or bad we simply see it to be at an awkward, teenage stage of its development, a stage at which it needs good friends and support more than ever if it is to become all it can be.

We hope you can identify with our view of the UN. If you remember just one thing it’s that we can’t expect to benefit from a better UN without you.
